“You’re the color of sunshine and of the flakes of gold in your eyes.”

First, I’d like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. If the Ring Fits is the second installment in Camilla Isley’s Funny Feelings series. The story follows Rowena, a witty and driven software engineer, and Adrian, a suave investment banker, who suggests a fake relationship to win over his CEO. The novel humorously and heartwarmingly explores their evolving dynamic as they navigate the complexities of their arrangement, confront personal insecurities, and face the challenges that arise in their unconventional journey toward love.

Summary of If the ring fits by Camilla Isley

When Life Gives You Lemons, Fake an Engagement

When investment banker Adrian and software engineer Rowena started the day, they didn’t expect to end it engaged! But Adrian has invented a fake fiancée to impress his CEO, regretting the lie almost immediately, and now he is in hot water. Meanwhile, Rowena’s career has just gone up in flames, leaving her unemployed, unexpectedly expecting with no father in the picture, and short of options. When fate throws these two hot messes into a meet-cute of epic proportions, it’s a match made in rock-bottom heaven. They say love is blind, and with nothing to lose, Adrian gets down on one knee… and Rowena says yes!

The rules of engagement are simple:

Pretend to be madly in love

Keep their real lives separate

Absolutely, positively do NOT catch feelings

However, faking it is harder than they thought, especially when every overnight stay comes with only one bed and zero personal space—blurring that imaginary line between ‘just business’ and ‘definitely personal.’

Soon, their carefully constructed charade starts to feel alarmingly… real. Can Adrian and Rowena stick to their engagement pact, or will their fake relationship graduate to something authentically messy, complicated, and wonderful?

Find out in this hilarious, heartwarming tale of two strangers who said “I do” before they even said “Hello.” Because sometimes, the worst day of your life just might lead to the best mistake you’ll ever make.

If the Ring Fits is an age gap, marriage of convenience rom-com with a multi-millionaire MMC and a STEM FMC perfect for fans of Lynn Painter, Sarah Adams and Fallon Ballard

Review of If the ring fits by Camilla Isley

Marriage of convenience and fake dating are two of my absolute favorite tropes in romance novels, and If the Ring Fits by Camilla Isley certainly delivers on these fronts, providing all the fun and charm expected from such setups. However, despite the satisfying execution of these tropes, the characters, particularly the FMC, felt somewhat flat and frustrating at times, which made it harder to fully connect with their journey. While the book has its enjoyable moments, the lack of depth in character development occasionally detracted from the overall experience.

Plot Analysis of If the ring fits by Camilla Isley

In If the Ring Fits by Camilla Isley, the story follows Rowena and Adrian in a quirky and unexpected setup. Rowena’s life takes a sharp turn when she’s fired on the same day she discovers she’s pregnant with her verbally abusive ex’s child. Meanwhile, Adrian, a competitive investment banker, learns he’s in the running for the CEO position but worries his lack of a “family man” image will hinder his chances. The two cross paths in a hilariously not so meet cute in the bathroom, where Adrian quickly proposes a mutually beneficial arrangement: Rowena will pose as his pregnant fiancée to help him win favor with his boss, and in return, she gets financial support and a safe place to live. Neither anticipates the blossoming of genuine feelings, but as their fake relationship deepens, they realize love has its own plans.

Characters of If the ring fits by Camilla Isley

Rowena Taylor : I struggled to connect with Rowena as a character. She embodies a mix of hot-and-cold behavior that felt inconsistent and contradictory at times. One moment, she’s shy and reserved, and the next, she’s confident and flirtatious, making bold advances. Her self-esteem fluctuated drastically throughout the story, shifting from self-assured to self-deprecating which made it difficult for me to relate to her. Additionally, her lack of communication and occasional immaturity added to my frustration with her character. These traits hindered my ability to fully invest in her journey and root for her development. And as much as I tried, I couldn’t get past her habit of calling a 39-year-old man “Bunny”, it made me cringe every time.

Adrian West : Adrian’s character felt flat, which made it challenging to connect with him. He lacked depth and distinctive traits that would make him stand out or leave a lasting impression. As a result, I found it difficult to engage with his journey or feel invested in his perspective. His actions and motivations seemed surface-level, and I’m honestly struggling to find significant aspects of his character to discuss, which further reflects how unmemorable he was for me.

Rowena & Adrian : The relationship between Rowena and Adrian in If the Ring Fits felt forced and lacked natural progression. While the premise of a fake engagement offered plenty of potential for romantic tension and character growth, their dynamic didn’t feel fully fleshed out. The chemistry between them seemed inconsistent, with moments of connection overshadowed by miscommunication and underdeveloped emotional depth. Their interactions often felt more transactional than heartfelt, and the lack of meaningful exploration of their feelings made their romance difficult to root for. It was hard to see a genuine bond form, which left the relationship feeling unconvincing.

Pacing & writing style

The writing shows promise but feels uneven in execution. While Camilla does a good job capturing the initial chemistry and banter between the characters, the narrative often lacks depth and subtlety. Some scenes are overly detailed, while others that require more exploratio, like the emotional challenges of postpartum depression, are rushed or glossed over.

Dialogue between characters occasionally sparkles, especially during lighter moments, but the emotional beats sometimes feel forced or underdeveloped.

The pacing in If the Ring Fits felt inconsistent, creating a disjointed reading experience. Early on, the story spends ample time establishing the relationship between Rowena and Adrian. However, as the story progresses, the pacing shifts dramatically, especially in the final chapters. The rushed third act breakup feels abrupt and lacks the buildup needed to make it impactful, resolving in just a few chapters with minimal emotional depth. The last few chapters seem rushed, with major emotional beats like the breakup, postpartum struggles, and eventual reconciliation receiving insufficient attention.

This inconsistency in tone and pacing impacts the overall immersion, making certain parts of the story engaging while others feel rushed or disconnected. Despite these issues, the witty premise and moments of humor showcase Camilla Isley’s potential as a romance writer.

Final Thought

I feel like I’m in the minority for not enjoying If the Ring Fits by Camilla Isley, so please take my review with a grain of salt. While this book features my favorite romance tropes, such as fake dating and marriage of convenience, it just didn’t work for me.

The characters, especially Rowena, made it hard for me to stay engaged. I found her frustrating, constantly wanting to shout, “JUST SPEAK UP AND COMMUNICATE!” for most of the book. Her indecision and lack of consistency made it difficult to connect with her, and I felt detached from the story as a result.

Apart from the initial “meet puke” moment, nothing truly stood out to me. The pacing dragged in places, and I found myself counting down the pages, wondering when I’d finish. Unfortunately, this book wasn’t a match for me, but I’m sure others may enjoy its humor and premise.

A big thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC!
