“Just because we might die here together doesn’t mean you get access to all my deep, dark secrets.” “What makes you so sure we’d know each other in another life?” “Because I can’t imagine any life without you there to drive me completely insane.”
Not gonna lie, when I decided to read King of Gluttony, I didn’t have super high expectations because my last three reads by Ana Huang were all 3-star books for me. So honestly, that’s pretty much what I was expecting from this one too.
But when I tell you I was SURPRISED when I found myself enjoying this book so much!! 😭 It genuinely felt like I was finally finding the Ana Huang stories that I love again, and I was having such a good time reading it. Like YES, this is what I’ve been missing!!
Summary of King of Gluttony by Ana Huang
She’s his greatest rival . . . and his greatest weakness.
Handsome, talented, and beloved by (almost) everyone, Sebastian Laurent is used to being on top. The heir to a culinary empire, his sharp instincts and effortless charm have made him a legend. What people don’t see are the demons lurking beneath his golden-boy façade. There’s only one person who’s come close to knowing the real him – Maya Singh, his childhood rival and secret obsession. She’s also the only one who’s ever successfully challenged him. He can’t stand her, but if that’s true . . . why can’t he stop thinking about her?
**
Smart, witty, and competitive to a fault, top marketing executive Maya Singh is used to winning – unless her opponent is Sebastian. It’s something that’s infuriated and motivated her her entire life.
So when a series of unfortunate events forces her to work with her sworn enemy, she’s determined to one-up him and show the world who’s the best once and for all.
What she didn’t count on? Not hating their time together. To her horror, she might even . . . like it.
There may be a thin line between love and hate, but that’s one line she’ll never cross. Not with him. Not ever.
Review of King of Gluttony by Ana Huang
I really enjoyed reading King of Gluttony. It honestly reminded me of how much I enjoyed King of Pride, and let me tell you, Kai Young is THAT man for me. And do with that information what you want. 😭
But anyway, let’s dive into the review and get deeper into all my thoughts because I definitely have a lot to say about this one. 👀
Plot Analysis of King of Gluttony by Ana Huang
IMAGINE THIS: you’ve been rivals with this man basically your WHOLE life. Like, since you were old enough to know the difference between good and bad, you already knew one thing: Sebastian Laurent is the enemy. 😭
And now your father decides to force you to work with him on one of the biggest projects of your career. Oh, and did I mention he’s also the son of your father’s best friend? Because apparently being lifelong rivals wasn’t complicated enough.
But it’s fine, right? You’re both adults. You just have to be cordial, professional, find some common ground, get the job done and move on with your lives. What could possibly go wrong?
Well… EVERYTHING. 😭
Because somewhere between competing, arguing and trying to prove who’s better at literally everything, feelings start getting in the way. And suddenly the man you’ve spent your whole life trying to beat might not be someone you hate as much as you thought.
And Sebastian? Yeah… turns out his feelings toward Maya might have been a LOT more complicated for a very long time. 👀
Yeah. You already know where this is going. 😭
Characters of King of Gluttony by Ana Huang
Maya Singh: She was fierce, independent and strong-willed. She’s basically the embodiment of a strong woman who never backs down from something just because it scares her, and I really loved that about her. BUT girl could be MEAN sometimes💀. Like, some of the things she said physically hurt ME and I wasn’t even the one receiving them lmao. Poor Seb honestly. But apart from that, I didn’t really connect with her that much. I liked her and enjoyed her character, but she didn’t leave a huge impact on me or make me feel particularly attached to her by the end. 🤷♀️
Sebastian Laurent: He is the EMBODIMENT of yearning. THIS MAN!!! Oh my, oh my, I loved him so much 🫠. Honestly, Kai was CHALLENGED for his crown with this one, and for a moment there… I genuinely thought we were about to witness a change of monarchy.
Sebastian was just so fiercely in love with Maya, and we LOVE a man who actually makes us believe he’s completely gone for his woman and would do absolutely anything for her. Give me a man who YEARNS any day, every day, and I will be on my knees for him. I said what I said🤭. I also loved how talented and passionate he was about what he did. Even after everything he struggled with, he still stood with his head high and his ambitions even higher, and I really admired that about him. And I especially loved seeing him slowly open up to Maya about his struggles and his past, even when you could tell how difficult it was for him.
So Sebastian Laurent… congratulations. You came dangerously close. You had me questioning my loyalty, reconsidering my rankings, and looking at Kai’s throne a little differently. BUT KAI YOUNG REMAINS KING. Sebastian may have lost the battle, but trust me… that crown has NEVER been this threatened.
The romance: The dynamic between these two was TOP TIER. The banter was SO GOOD, and I loved their relationship so much! The rivals to lovers trope was just so well executed 🤌.
Honestly, give me a good rivals to lovers any day over a bad enemies to lovers where they supposedly hate each other but are already lusting over each other by chapter one.
And the tension between Maya and Sebastian??? SO GOOD. I loved how the romance slowly crept up on them instead of just being thrown in our faces from the beginning. And watching Sebastian get more and more possessive while desperately trying to hide the fact that his feelings for her were definitely NOT new? Oh, I was eating that up. 👀
Because this man had been carrying those feelings for YEARS, and meanwhile he was supposed to act like she was just his annoying childhood rival?? Sebastian, baby… you were fooling absolutely NO ONE.
Pacing & writing style
The writing in King of Gluttony was, as usual with Ana Huang, super easy to follow and easy to read. I swear I find myself reading faster every time I pick up one of her books. And when I’m actually loving the story on top of that? It just makes the whole reading experience even more enjoyable.
The romance, the tension, the dynamic between Maya and Sebastian… all of that was GOOD. And Sebastian’s character arc was so well done, which honestly doesn’t surprise me because Ana knows how to write her men🫠.
BUT the actual plot? Ehhh… it was kinda mid. And very predictable.
And I KNOW what you’re thinking: girl, it’s a romance book, what plot are you even talking about?? BUT HEAR ME OUT. Have you read Twisted Games? Twisted Lies? Even King of Envy?? YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. Ana usually gives us something more happening outside of the romance, and this one just felt… ordinary? Like it could’ve been the plot of any random contemporary romance.
And can we talk about them getting stuck in the forest?? Because that whole part felt so out of place to me. I KNOW it was probably there to give us a more intense forced-proximity moment and push them closer together, but honestly, it felt like it was thrown in just to fill some space and convince us that okay, NOW they’re getting closer. Personally? Give me more of them bickering in the office instead. 😂 I was already loving their rivalry and their banter, and I genuinely think watching that tension build naturally while they were forced to work together would’ve done way more for me than suddenly getting them stuck in a forest.
And honestly, by the end, especially that epilogue, I was so over it💀. I loved the romance, I loved Sebastian, I had such a good time for most of the book… but plot-wise? Yeah, this one definitely wasn’t giving me what some of her previous books gave me.
The pacing in King of Gluttony was mostly good and really easy to follow. I never felt like the story was dragging for most of the book, and it was pretty easy to just keep reading.
BUT by the end? I was over it. I reached that point where I was basically like, yes, okay, I get it… can we wrap this up now please? 😂 It wasn’t necessarily boring, I just felt like the story had already given me everything I needed and was taking a little too long to actually END.

Some quotes I enjoyed
“For what it’s worth…” Sebastian’s voice was barely audible beneath the crackle of the fire. “If I could choose someone to spend my last hours with, I’d choose you.”
“Maya was the least suited for an arranged marriage. She was too fiery. Too untamable. Too mine.”
“Never take anyone for granted…You never know when someone will be gone forever.”
“That doesn’t make sense. You hate me.” Another laugh, this one low and laced with frustration. “I never hated you, Sal,” Sebastian said. “Not once. Not ever.”
“Did that feel like a mistake to you?” he asked, his voice rough. The intensity in his gaze made my lungs constrict. I shook my head, unable to form words. My mouth felt swollen and tender, and I whimpered when he pressed his thumb in between my lips. “Good,” he said softly. “Because if it did, I would’ve had to fuck the doubt out of you.”
“She laughed at something Neha’s husband said, and my chest constricted. I wanted to see her smile at me like that again. I wanted…fuck, I wanted everything about her again.”
“Some people waited their whole lives to experience something that inevitably turned out to be a disappointment. I’d waited my whole life to kiss Maya, and it’d shattered every expectation I’d ever had. It’d stolen my reason, my control, my fucking sanity, and I’d be damned if I let her go without a fight.”
“She was so damn stubborn, but that was one of the things that drew me to her. I didn’t want her despite her thorny edges; I wanted her because of them. She was the lightning to my storm, the fire to my darkness.”
“I want to be with you. Through every season, every iteration of our relationship…it’s always been you. I’m tired of pretending it’s not. And you’re right—we’re always fighting and competing, but that’s why I like you. You challenge me in a way no one else does, and you see me in a way no one else has. Sometimes you drive me up the wall, but you’re never boring. You are…my match in every way. You make me feel alive.”
Final Thoughts
Overall, King of Gluttony was such a nice surprise for me, especially after my last few Ana Huang books were all sitting around the 3-star mark. I went into this expecting another okay, that was good, moving on kind of read, and instead I found myself actually LOVING parts of it 🤭. It genuinely reminded me why I enjoy Ana’s books so much in the first place.
And honestly? Sebastian carried a LOT of that enjoyment. This man and his YEARNING!!! 🫠 His character arc, his passion, the way he loved Maya, the way he slowly opened up to her… yeah, I was gone. Kai Young’s crown was shaking for a minute there. Not enough to fall, obviously, but SHAKING.
I also loved Maya and Sebastian’s dynamic. The rivalry, the banter, the tension, the slow progression from I cannot stand you to wait… why do I actually like being around you? was exactly what I wanted. This is how you give me rivals-to-lovers!! I’ll take this any day over two “enemies” who are mentally undressing each other by chapter two 😂.
Where the book lost me a little was the plot. It was predictable, some parts, looking at you, random forest situation, felt thrown in just to push the romance forward, and by the end I was READY to wrap things up. The epilogue especially had me like, okayyy, I love you guys but can we go home now?
Still, I had such a good time with this one. Was the plot anything extraordinary? No. Did I care while Sebastian Laurent was out here yearning like his life depended on it? Also no.
So thank you, Sebastian, for reminding me that apparently all I need is a man who yearns properly and suddenly I’m willing to forgive a multitude of sins.

King of Gluttony by Ana Huang Age Rating
I recommend King of Gluttony by Ana Huang to readers 18 and up because of its mature content. This one is actually pretty mild when it comes to dark themes, but it still deals with some deeper and more mature topics that I think are better suited for an adult audience. So nothing too crazy here, but I would still keep this one for 18+ readers.
